Holly Peters Hirst

Holly Hirst is an award-winning teacher and professor of mathematics at Appalachian State University, and currently serves as department coordinator for courses in modeling, numerical methods, and operations research. She also coordinates Appalachian State University's Annenberg/CPB INPUT award-winning quantitative literacy course and the associated computer lab, and is co-author of the course materials, including the text How Do You Know? Using Math to Make Decisions.

Since Dr. Hirst received her Ph.D. in mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1989, she has been active in the field of computational science. Over the last ten years, she has given more than 75 presentations and taught more than 50 workshops centered around incorporating modeling and computation into mathematics and science courses at all levels. She was co-Principle Investigator on both the NSF Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement grant that funded the Shodor Computational Science Institutes from 1998 to 2002 and on the NSF Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement grant that currently funds the National Computational Science Institute.

In addition to teaching and coordinating the graduate program in mathematics at Appalachian, Dr. Hirst is involved in the National Computational Science Institute as workshop coordinator and instructor, and in development and dissemination of the middle grades mathematics materials in Project Interactivate .
