Instructions - Dust in the Interstellar Medium Model

Purpose:

The Dust in the Interstellar Medium model solves for the absorption and scattering of light from spherical particles assuming a Mie solution.

Single Grain Model

  • The average interstellar extinction curve will appear in blue.
  • The optical depth of the model will appear in red.
  • Use the choice control to select the grain material.
  • Use the grain size sliderbar to increase or decrease the grain size in microns.
  • Use the column density sliderbar to increase or decrease the amount of dust in the line of sight.

    Multiple Grain Model

  • Each grain material has its own size and column density sliderbar
  • The average interstellar extinction curve will appear in blue.
  • The total optical depth will appear in red.
  • The optical depth due to graphite will appear in gray.
  • The optical depth due to amorphous carbon will appear in green.
  • The optical depth due to silicate will appear in light blue.
  • Use the grain size sliderbar to increase or decrease the grain size in microns.
  • Use the column density sliderbar to increase or decrease the amount of dust in the line of sight.
