Instructions - Dust in the Interstellar Medium Model
Purpose:
The Dust in the Interstellar Medium model solves for the absorption and scattering of light from spherical particles assuming a Mie solution.
Single Grain Model
The average interstellar extinction curve will appear in blue.
The optical depth of the model will appear in red.
Use the choice control to select the grain material.
Use the grain size sliderbar to increase or decrease the grain size in microns.
Use the column density sliderbar to increase or decrease the amount of dust in the line of sight.
Multiple Grain Model
Each grain material has its own size and column density sliderbar
The average interstellar extinction curve will appear in blue.
The total optical depth will appear in red.
The optical depth due to graphite will appear in gray.
The optical depth due to amorphous carbon will appear in green.
The optical depth due to silicate will appear in light blue.
Use the grain size sliderbar to increase or decrease the grain size in microns.
Use the column density sliderbar to increase or decrease the amount of dust in the line of sight.
